Is Selfishness Genetic?

Posted by on Oct 11, 2011 in Culture, Parenting | 0 comments

A WSJ article (‘It’s Mine!’ Overriding The Selfish Gene – WSJ.com) this morning discusses the quest to determine whether selfishness is genetic. Frankly, that can’t be the case since my kids are selfish and they couldn’t have gotten that from me. Karaña? :-)

Seriously, whether or not they’ll ever find it in the DNA strand, it certainly is genetic in the sense that it has been passed down from generation to generation beginning with our first ancestors in Genesis 3. Kids are sinners, period. Anyone who disagrees with that frankly just isn’t paying attention.

So let’s not be surprised when our kids sin. That’s what sinners do. But let’s make sure that they hear regularly about the antidote for this disease – the gospel of Jesus Christ.

From a friend at Provident Films:

1) Ranking. COURAGEOUS was the #4 movie in the country, though it opened against six other movies with almost three times as many screens. It was the #1 new movie of the weekend!

2) Audience. More than 1 million people saw COURAGEOUS this weekend. That’s a lot of lives changed!

3) Box office. Total box-office was $9.0 million, $2.2 million more than Fireproof on opening weekend.

Make sure to catch Courageous this weekend!

Courageous, the latest movie from Sherwood Pictures, opens today. These are the folks who brought you Fireproof and Facing the Giants and they’ve really done a great job with this one as well. I’ve had the opportunity to see this twice in pre-screenings and it really delivers a punch. In fact, after the screening for all of the Campus Crusade staff in July the group erupted!

This movie is particularly focused on courageous manhood as I described in my recent newsletter. I believe it really is going to have an enormous impact on millions of men who will see it and it offers you a great opportunity to go with some friends and let God work. Ladies will really enjoy it as well.

As you probably know, the first weekend is critical to the success of a film so if you can get to the theater this weekend and continue to support this movement of great Christian films, I encourage you to do so. It will have an impact.

Family Dinners linked to Teen Moral Health

Family Dinners linked to Teen Moral Health

A Columbia University study linked the frequency of family dinners (you remember, where everyone sits down together to eat) to teen smoking, drinking and drug usage.

This really shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone and, while I think family dinners are very important, this seems to me to be an easy way to measure the amount of interaction that a family gets. Clearly the positive involvement of parents in their children’s lives will raise healthier children. More time communicating about the simple things in life makes a huge difference.
