Is Selfishness Genetic?

A WSJ article (‘It’s Mine!’ Overriding The Selfish Gene – WSJ.com) this morning discusses the quest to determine whether selfishness is genetic. Frankly, that can’t be the case since my kids are selfish and they couldn’t have gotten that from me. Karaña? :-)

Seriously, whether or not they’ll ever find it in the DNA strand, it certainly is genetic in the sense that it has been passed down from generation to generation beginning with our first ancestors in Genesis 3. Kids are sinners, period. Anyone who disagrees with that frankly just isn’t paying attention.

So let’s not be surprised when our kids sin. That’s what sinners do. But let’s make sure that they hear regularly about the antidote for this disease – the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I’ve just started as the Scoutmaster of our local Boy Scout troop and have been heavily engaged in preparing for this new responsibility. I have a deep respect for Scouting and what it can mean to a boy because I know what it did in my life.
